A Week to Remember at Merton House Hotel

From Monday 2nd to Friday 6th June 2025, Holidays with Help enjoyed a fantastic respite break in the beautiful town of Ross-on-Wye. This time, we stayed at the welcoming Merton House Hotel, a new venue for us that quickly won our hearts. With its stunning views across the River Wye from the garden and friendly, attentive staff, it was the perfect setting for a memorable holiday.

The hotel team couldn’t do enough for us — always on hand and happy to help. Each evening, they provided entertainment, followed by a lively disco where our guests danced the night away. Some even grabbed the microphones to show off their best lip-syncing and air-singing skills, much to everyone’s delight! The food throughout the week was also well received, keeping everyone well-fuelled for our daily adventures.

Our holiday highlights included:

  • A trip to Gloucester Docks, where we explored the National Waterways Museum and wandered through the charming surrounding area.
  • A visit to West Midlands Safari Park. After a slightly comedic delay thanks to a giraffe blocking the road, we had a brilliant time seeing all the animals up close.
  • We spent the morning discovering the local shops and sights of Ross-on-Wye. In the afternoon, we hosted a cheerful garden party — moved into the conservatory thanks to classic British weather! This was a particularly special occasion, as we celebrated Holidays with Help’s 25th anniversary with a delicious cake, a fun game of bingo, and a raffle that raised an amazing £80.

The week was a huge success, filled with laughter, companionship, and unforgettable moments. We're already looking forward to returning to Merton House in the future.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Volunteers

Our holiday coincided with National Volunteers’ Week, which felt particularly fitting. Holidays with Help is run entirely by volunteers — a dedicated team who give their time and energy to ensure each break is safe, fun, and inclusive for everyone.

We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to every single volunteer who makes these holidays possible. A special shout-out goes to Rosie, Dave, Graham, Rocky, Andrea, Brandon, Joan, Chris, Rose, Allan, Pam, Lyn, and Sarah for their incredible hard work throughout the week.

Here’s to 25 years of Holidays with Help — and many more to come!

Tales from the Walled Garden

We recently received a copy of a very entertaining booked called 'Tales from the Walled Garden' written by one of our supporters Jean Burgess. The story is about a group of friends, a Walled Garden, and sharing the ups and downs and ins and outs of growing fruit, veg and flowers. The story is based on a real walled garden and a project which offers social and therapeutic horticulture for members of the local community with learning difficulties and/or mental health issues. It's well worth a read. We found ourselves real connections to some of the stories and events! Further details can be found here
