David Lewis was a normal healthy boy – blue eyed, blond hair, full of life and busy as a bee. His hobbies were endless – making model aeroplanes, writing, painting, drawing, playing the organ and cornet and an active member of the scouts.

His Mum described him as a loveable rogue but one who studied hard, loved flying and simply longed to be a pilot.

But this was not to be. In 1989 he promised a friend that he would help by doing his paper-round and, despite his Mum and Dad’s concerns, a promise was a promise to David. He was knocked off his bicycle, suffered serious head injuries and lapsed into a coma. For two years he remained in hospital, often hanging onto life by a thread but with the loving support of Mum and Dad, one of whom was always with him.

Finally he came home, brain damaged, epileptic and unable to walk or utter a single word. He was just 13. Doctors said there was nothing that could be done but David’s parents were not going to give up. They spent hours, days, weeks and months talking to him, teaching him to play ball, do simple jigsaw puzzles, colour pictures and caring for him. Now in his 20's, David still needs 24 hour care and attention.

In 2002, the family heard about Holidays with Help and went on their first visit to Blackpool. Knowing how much care David needed and how difficult it was to be away from home, Muriel and Alan were a little concerned but their fears very quickly evaporated when they arrived.

Muriel said ‘the accommodation was excellent, clean and comfortable. Everyone was so friendly and it was good to know that we had constant support from experienced and knowledgeable people. David had a wonderful time taking part in the activities and having the opportunity to make so many new friends.

This holiday has made such a difference to him and us all – we will definitely be coming back next year.’
